Cycle Right Programme

Pedal Safely and Confidently:

CYCLE RIGHT is the National Standard for Cycle Training and provides practical cycle safety and skills training to promote competent and confident cyclists. It is an inclusive program produced and supported by the Department of Transport, the Road Safety Authority, and Cycling Ireland, with input from central and local agencies and other groups. Our Cycle Right Programs are led by certified instructors who teach essential cycling skills and road safety. Through a mix of yard-based road traffic scenarios and interactive games, students learn the rules of the road, bike handling, and safe cycling practices. The aim is for students to confidently practice their skills on quiet roads by the end of the program, promoting a culture of safe and active commuting.

Enriching and Fun:

Our afterschool activities provide students with a range of options to stay active and engaged beyond regular school hours. These programs are designed to cater to different interests and skill levels, ensuring that every student finds something they enjoy. From sports and fitness sessions to creative and exploratory activities, our afterschool programs help students develop new skills and hobbies in a supportive and fun environment. Activities include:

1. What is the Cycle Right Programme?
The Cycle Right Programme is Ireland's National Cycling Training Programme. It teaches children essential cycling skills and road safety, helping them gain confidence while riding. The programme is designed to ensure participants understand the rules of the road and know how to safely share space with other road users.

2. What age group is the Cycle Right Programme suitable for?
The programme is tailored for school-aged children, typically starting from age 8 upwards, depending on the school or class involved. It is an ideal complement to physical education and well-being initiatives within schools.

3. How much does the Cycle Right Programme cost?
Cycle Right costs only €60 per child (€35 of this cost is funded by the Department of Transport with an additional €10 for Deis Schools). The remaining cost of training may vary depending on additional supports from An Taisce local authorities and/or local sports partnerships availale to the School. The average cost per child after subsidies is usually between €15 – €20 per head.

4. How long is the Cycle Right training?
The programme is an 8-hour training delivered over 6 sessions. Each session typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, with the programme running over several weeks.

5. Where does the training take place?
Most of the training takes place on school grounds, providing a safe and controlled environment. The final session of the programme is conducted on-road to give children practical experience in real-world cycling conditions.

6. Do children need to bring their own bikes and helmets?
We can provide bikes and helmets for the programme, or participants are welcome to bring their own. If they bring their own, it's important that their bikes are roadworthy, and helmets fit correctly for safety during training.

7. Who delivers the Cycle Right Programme?
The programme is delivered by fully qualified Cycle Right instructors who are experienced in working with children and ensuring a fun, safe, and informative learning experience.

8. How do I book the Cycle Right Programme for my school?
Schools interested in booking the programme can get in touch with us via our website or contact us directly. We’ll provide details on availability and work with you to plan and schedule the training sessions that fit within your school timetable.

9. What will my child learn in the Cycle Right Programme?
Throughout the programme, children will learn essential cycling skills, such as starting and stopping safely, understanding traffic signals and road signs, positioning on the road, and how to interact with other road users. The training also focuses on hazard awareness and decision-making while cycling.

10. How is the programme funded?
The programme is partly funded by the Department of Transport and the Road Safety Authority. Local authorities and sports partnerships may also provide additional funding to lower the cost for participants.

11. Can children who don't know how to ride a bike participate?
Yes! The Cycle Right Programme is fully inclusive and suitable for children of all cycling abilities.
